Presentation of the study "Access and use of ict by persons with disabilities"

The report presented yesterday by the state secretariat for Social Services and equality and the Vodafone Group Foundation noted the need for innovation to universalization.

The secretary of State of social services and equality and The Secretary-General of the royal Board on disability, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla and the president of Vodafone spain and Fundación Vodafone España, Francisco Román presented yesterday the publication “ access and use of ict by persons with disabilities ”.

The objective of the study, carried out by the Fundación Vodafone España, is to provide greater understanding and help raise awareness of society on the possibilities that ict offered to persons with disabilities to improve their welfare and employment possibilities.

The report, which has received the support of Fundación ONCE Foundation and CERMI and Thyme (made by the field study), based on exploitation of the survey EPDFVE 2013, intended for people with visual disability, hearing and mobility between 18 and 64 years living in homes in Spain.

The main conclusions:

  • Potential of the Internet, for persons with disabilities despite the fact that today, only a 32.9 per cent of respondents use this tool in their daily lives. This figure rises however to analyse the use of the Internet by persons with hearing disabilities, to 61.8%. This group is also the most active participants in social networks (56.1%)
  • That is the universalization of the mobile phone use in all collective, to be the vehicle used by nearly 92 per cent of respondents.
  • 100% Believe that the incorporation of ict to work has increased its employment possibilities.
  • The majority of respondents believed that the accessibility of the devices and applications is an indispensable tool to improve their quality of life and personal autonomy.
  • Persons sondeadas believe that the price of adapted devices can be a barrier, funded by advances in technology and the anticipated reduction in costs in the future.
