In a nutshell:
Large-Scale Pilots (LSPs) within the European Union are perceived as crucial means to respond to a twofold goal: First, to promote the concept of “smart growth”, which according to the ‘Europe 2020 Agenda’, is a cornerstone for Europe’s future. Second, to help Europe become more than just a sum of its parts in order to compete and grow effectively. The European Commission, in its endeavour to make the EU a leading global competitive power, faces the challenge to remove digital borders and promote the ICT industry. The advantages from turning the EU into a Digital Single Market relate to the reduction of transaction costs and the establishment of free movement of persons, capital and ideas. The application of LSPs enhances the shift to the “e” space for a very broad range of activities, thus facilitating citizens and businesses to build, connect and grow.
