The eu and the united states signed an administrative arrangement on Artificial Intelligence and information technology to address global challenges to the public good in the areas of climate change, natural disasters, health care, energy and agriculture.

The united states department of state and the directorate-General for communications networks, content and technology (DG CONNECT) of the european commission signed a ‘ administrative arrangement on artificial intelligence to the public good 'in a virtual ceremony held simultaneously on 27 january 2023 in the white house in Washington DC and in DG CONNECT, Brussels.

The agreement is based on the principles expressed in the Statement in the future of the Internet (Opens in new window) and the interests and values of the use of digital technologies to address the emerging global challenges. The agreement will be implemented by institutions and relevant agencies of the united states and the eu working in this area.

Greater collaboration in research will help to identify and further develop promising results of research of IA have the potential to comprehensive social benefits in areas ranging from climate change, natural disasters, health and medicine, the optimisation of the electricity grid to agriculture.

The extreme weather and natural disasters such as floods or fires are increasingly common and destructive throughout the world and IA will play an increasingly important for the prediction and simulation, which will help the disaster preparedness and emergency response. The investigation and computing with IA also have the potential to greatly improve performance, efficiency and sustainability of crops through analysis and modelling of natural conditions, such as soil conditions and the atmosphere, the trends of birds and insects, as well as the planting cycles, irrigation, use of pesticides and fertilizers and harvesting. The IA is already driving medical research, diagnosis and treatment and, while the recent pandemic has reinforced the need for a truly global approach, has also highlighted the divide between countries.

More importantly, to reduce this gap, this agreement will also target share findings and resources with international partners who share common values but lack capacities relevant to help them to handle such emergencies and challenges.
