The directive on safety network and information shall enhance cooperation between member states in the subject of vital importance of cybersecurity. It stipulates the obligations of the security council for the operators of essential services (in critical sectors such as energy, transport, health and finance) and the digital service providers (online markets, search engines and cloud services). Additionally be required of each state of the eu to designate one or more national authorities and to develop a strategy to address the cyber threats.
The dutch presidency, together with the security of networks and information about the eu, has begun to prepare for the implementation of the directive. The 5 april 1st informal meeting of the network of teams of response to incidents of computer security (CSIRT), established under the Directive, followed by a second meeting in Riga on 10 may.
The position taken by the eu council at first reading confirms the agreement reached with the European Parliament in december 2015 to complete the procedure, the legal act is yet to be formally adopted by the european parliament at second reading. It is hoped that the Directive enters into force in august 2016.
