The National Observatory of telecommunications and the information society (ONTSI) has developed the 2020 of the annual report of the ict sector, the media and audiovisual services.

The Annual Report of the ict sector, the media and audiovisual services 2020 (Opens in new window) , (which was published accompanied Introduction (Opens in new window) ), shows the main structural characteristics of the sector, their development in 2019 and their evolution over the past 6 years. In that regard, it considers a number of key indicators such as the number of companies that make it up, the number of business and employment generated, as well as their investments. These key indicators are complemented with other economic in nature as the added value generated in the sector, external trade, foreign direct investment in the sector, and the investment made by spanish companies in the sector abroad.

The ict sector

The ict sector of spain has experienced during 2019 positive behaviour in all indicators which are reflected in this report: number of companies, turnover, employed persons, investment and Gross Value Added generated.

The number of companies of the ict sector has grown in 2019 similar to the previous year (+ 3.4 per cent), reaching 25.905 companies. The companies involved in the provision of ICT services carry the greatest weight (96.5 per cent) and its increase (+ 3.4 per cent) is reflected in the overall growth of the sector. The companies of all branches within the provision of services (computer activities, trade and telecommunications) had increased in number. The ICT manufacturing companies have increased to a lesser extent (+ 1.8%).

The turnover of the ict sector grew by 2019 3.9% to 95.473 million euros. In this way, the growth trend of recent years. The majority of billing corresponds to ict services (95.8 per cent), which have experienced an increase of 4.1 per cent, while the turnover for ICT manufacturing, with a weight of 4.2 per cent, has slowed down considerably, growing 0.6 per cent.

Employment in the ict sector grew by 2019 5.5 per cent, which makes it possible to continue the positive trend that marks the period 2014-2019. In particular, the sector employs 446.881. The people in the branch of the sector that employs a greater number of workers, has experienced a growth of 7.7%. The negative note is the decrease, for the fourth consecutive year, on the use of telecommunications (1.4 per cent).

The ICT sector investment and content grows in 2019 10.3 per cent, recovering well from 2018. Investment in information technology activities again fall (-1,1%). In the subsector of wholesale trade, the ICT investment increased by 75.5 per cent. In the telecommunications grew by 8.7 per cent.

The Gross Value Added of the ict sector in 2019 registered a value of 40.211 million euros, having increased from 2.7 per cent. The computer and telecommunications sectors are major contributors to this figure, whose weight on the national GDP is 3,23 per cent.

The ict sector, the media and audiovisual services

In 2019, the number of companies of the ict sector, the media and audiovisual services continues to grow in 2019 (2.2 per cent), but slows the pace for the past years. In total, the sector is formed by 35.884 enterprises. In particular, the number of companies in the ict sector has grown by 3.4 per cent, while the media and audiovisual services fell by 0.6 per cent.

Similarly the number of enterprises, the turnover of the ict sector, the media and audiovisual services maintains the growth trend in 2019, an increase of 4.7 per cent to 120.566 million euros. The billing of media and audiovisual services grows 7.9 per cent, turning the increase in the ict sector (+ 3.9%).

Employment in the ict sector, the media and audiovisual services also increases in 2019 (+ 4.6%), although at a lower rate than in the previous year (+ 7.3 per cent). The employed persons in the sector is situated in the 557.504 people. In this way continues the positive trend of recent years.

In line with the other indicators, investment in the ict sector, the media and audiovisual services in spain grows in 2019 by 7.2 per cent to 18.429 million euros. In this way, follows the path to growth after a fall from 8.1 per cent in 2018.

The Gross Added Value at market prices of the information and communications in 2019 is 42,480 was paid millions euros after an increase of 2.7 per cent. Despite the slowdown of growth in 2018 (+ 5.2 per cent), this indicator has the positive trend experienced in recent years. The weight of the country is 3,41 per cent.

The Gross Added Value at market prices of the ict sector, the media and audiovisual services in 2019 reaches a value of 48.295 million euros to thrive by 2.7%. Their weight on the National gdp is 3,88 per cent.
